These antique handcrafted pots are a traditional design called ‘tokanabe’ which means ‘tree bark finish’. This is due to the intricate pressed mold surface that resembles the look of tree bark over the entire outside surfaces of them. Very often they were only mildly accented with small hand painted floral art in just red & green, just like we see here on these 2 vessels. Likely made between 1920- 1940, during the Meiji Taisho reign, these takanabe pots stand only about 4 inches tall, are made out of the natural earth, clay, soil composition of its region of Japan at that time, & are hand-painted mostly with black and dark brown. Each one has its own unique characteristics, which makes them so special! Though they have very similar sizes, shapes, colors, each was hand painted with it own unique design. The small red flowers on either side, little green leaf accents finish of this simplistic and functional ‘tokanabe’ design.
They were often used as decor or to hold cut flowers, but some were used for sake or tea also. You can see and feel the quality of these earthenware antiques when you hold them or place them up for display. They are thick and sturdy, can hold liquid perfect (no leaks) and would complement any style in any room! There are minor chips in the bases & around the top rims on the both (shown in photos), but in general they are in fantastic condition for being around 100 years old!
Simplistic Japanese handcrafted earthenware, in minimalist Japan and in excellent antique condition.

One of them leans just slightly to the side due to a tiny bump in the bottom structure of the flat plate but again, very hard to notice. less
