Early 20th Century Thai Bronze Thepphanom Devata Statue – Kneeling Celestial Guardian, 9”
Description:
An elegant early 20th century Thai bronze Thepphanom (Teppanom) statue depicting a celestial guardian angel or devata in a posture of reverence. Thepphanom figures are traditional temple guardians in Thai Buddhist art and symbolize divine protection, humility, and offering. They are commonly displayed in pairs at temple entrances or as devotional objects within sacred and domestic spaces.
This example portrays the female form kneeling gracefully with both legs tucked beneath her, hands pressed together at chest level in the traditional wai (Anjali Mudra) gesture — a symbol of prayer, respect, and spiritual devotion.
Notable Features:
Headdress: Tall, multi-tiered ceremonial crown (chada-style) with a prominent pointed spire and finely worked tiered detailing.
Face & Expression: Serene, idealized features with almond-shaped eyes, arched brows, full lips, and elongated earlobes — hallmarks of classical Thai divine imagery.
Ornamentation: Detailed breastplate/necklace, ornate shoulder elements resembling stylized wings, arm bands, and carefully defined jewelry.
Garment: Highly patterned lower attire with embossed floral and geometric Thai motifs.
Back Detailing: Crossed ornamental sashes, flowing decorative elements, and continued textile patterning.
The sculpture was cast using the traditional lost-wax method and displays fine hand-chased details throughout.
Material & Finish:
Solid cast bronze with a deep brown to near-black patina. Surface wear and highlights on raised areas are consistent with age and handling. There appear to be traces of earlier gilding, now softly worn, contributing to its authentic antique character.
Dimensions:
Height: 9 inches (23 cm)
Width: 3 inches (7.6 cm)
Depth: 3.75 inches (9.5 cm)
Condition:
Good antique condition consistent with early 20th century age. Natural patina, light surface wear, and minor rubbing to high points. No damage.
A refined and authentic Southeast Asian devotional sculpture — ideal for collectors of Asian art, temple artifacts, or curated global interiors.
