19th Century Tibetan Green Tara Bronze – Shyama Tara “Swift Liberator” – Himalayan Altar Sculpture
Description
A beautiful 19th century Himalayan bronze depicting Green Tara (Shyama Tara), the “Swift Liberator,” one of the most beloved female bodhisattvas in Tibetan and Mahayana Buddhism. Green Tara embodies active compassion, swift protection from fear and obstacles, and enlightened activity.
She is shown seated in lalitasana (royal ease posture) upon a lotus pedestal, symbolizing her readiness to rise and assist sentient beings. Her right hand extends in varada mudra (gesture of blessing and generosity), while her left hand holds the stem of a blooming utpala (blue lotus), representing purity and enlightenment emerging from worldly conditions.
The figure wears an elaborate five-leaf crown, necklaces, armlets, and celestial ornaments symbolizing the perfections of a bodhisattva. Her expression is serene, compassionate, and gently smiling — characteristic of devotional Himalayan bronzes of the 19th century.
The underside reveals a hollow cast base with engraved ritual symbolism (likely a double vajra/dorje motif), consistent with traditional Tibetan or Nepalese consecration practices. Such seals often indicate the sculpture was ritually prepared for shrine use.
The sculpture was created using the traditional lost-wax casting technique common to workshops in the Himalayan region, particularly Nepal and Tibet during the 19th century.
