Vintage 1978 Peter Mulcahy Hand-Signed Aviation Satire
Celebrate the whimsical side of flight with this original 1978 matted and framed lithograph by renowned satirical artist Peter Mulcahy. Titled "Flying is the second greatest experience known to Man (landing is the first)," this tall, narrow caricature features Mulcahy’s signature "contraption" style, depicting a jovial pilot in a fantastical helicopter.
What sets this particular lithograph apart is the hand-personalized provenance on the reverse. Directly from his famed Lumberville, PA studio, Peter Mulcahy hand-signed and inscribed this piece with the encouraging pilot’s sign-off: 'Keep 'em Flying!' This direct link to the artist's workshop makes it a superior example for collectors of 1970s satirical Americana and Pennsylvania regional art.
Provenance
This piece features a rare, hand-inscribed reverse from the artist's studio. The handwritten notes on the backing board read:
Top Left: "Peter! Lumberville, Pa. 18933" (Referencing the artist’s known studio location in Bucks County, PA).
Bottom Right: "Token, Keep 'em Flying, Peter!" — A personalized "warm regards" message and signature from the artist, Peter Mulcahy.
Condition
Consistent with age and use. The lithograph remains vibrant with no visible foxing or water damage. The silver metal frame shows minor surface scuffs and age-appropriate wear to the edges. The reverse cardboard backing is intact and features original hand-written notes and a personalized message from the artist.
A rare, personalized find from the height of Peter Mulcahy's "PeterPrints" era, this piece perfectly captures the lighthearted humor of late-70s satirical art.
