Beautiful brown, beige, blue, and white swirls on an hour glass vase. Examples of Niloak pottery are in the permanent collections of the National Museum of American History and Cooper Hewitt.

About Niloak Pottery:

Niloak Pottery (the name comes from “kaolin” spelled backwards) was formed in 1909 in Benton, Arkansas, by Charles Dean Hyten, who had operated Hyten Pottery after his father’s death. The distinguishing technique of Niloak Pottery was the swirling of different-colored Arkansas clays over classically-shaped bodies, using the force of the pottery wheel. This marbling technique was first developed at the Ouachita Pottery in Hot Springs, Arkansas, and Niloak’s version was labelled Mission Ware and used blue, red, white, gray, brown, and beige clays. Patented in 1928, the line was popular, and output expanded to 75,000 pieces per year. The factory became a tourist destination, and Hyten demonstrated the swirling technique around the country. Sales suffered during the Depression, and a less expensive line in solid and dripped colors was developed. The firm was sold in the mid-1930s, and some marbleized Niloak ware continued to be produced up to 1946. C.D. Hyten died in 1944. See less
