DESCRIPTION:
A beautiful and extremely rare antique wooden, hand-painted powder keg from the 18th century. The keg was used on ships to store dry gunpowder. It was sealed with a lid. At the bottom of the keg was an opening for removing some of the powder.
This unique powder keg is entirely hand-painted. One side depicts a farm landscape with a windmill, and the other depicts fishing boats (botters), likely sailing on the Zuiderzee.
These beautiful paintings feature two proverbs by Jacob Cats. The best pilots stand on shore (written "aan de wal" instead of "aan de land" since the 18th century). And on the other side is the proverb "Wie sal t maecken dat niemand t kan laecke" (Whoever decides, there will always be opponents who will not accept the decision). The proverbs are written in Old Dutch. The barrel is painted around these scenes in a refined Hindeloopen style. Over time, the paintings have developed a beautiful crackle finish.
The barrel is made from curved oak planks held in place by four copper rings. The ropes that filled the gaps between the planks have largely disappeared, but some can still be seen on the top edge.
In short, a truly unique item for true enthusiasts of beautiful antiques.
