A large continental maiolica vase and cover, produced circa 1860–1880 and executed in tin-glazed earthenware. Designed as a sculptural decorative object, the vase features a stippled ground and extensive applied relief with chinoiserie scenes, including pagodas, garden landscapes, foliage and figural motifs. The imagery represents a European imaginative view of China, typical of 19th-century decorative ceramics.
The construction involves multiple separately modelled elements applied after firing. Seated figures were originally positioned near both handles; one survives in damaged condition, while the others are now missing. Additional figural details were originally set within architectural niches at the lower register. The domed cover is surmounted by a seated figure and fits into an octagonal mouth, reinforcing the architectural quality of the design.
Comparable majolica chinoiserie vases and covers are recorded in Christie’s archives, described as English examples dated circa 1860. Related sculptural stoneware vessels were also produced by English makers such as Mason’s, reflecting the broader European fascination with chinoiserie during the period.
