Osiris pewter was a hallmark of German Art Nouveau, produced by the Scherf firm from 1899 to 1909, featuring designs by leading Jugendstil artists like Friedrich Adler and Peter Behrens.
Origins and the Scherf Firm
The Osiris Metallwarenfabrik was founded in 1899 in Nuremberg by Friedrich and Walter Scherf. Walter Scherf, who had previously worked for Orivit, brought both employees and design ideas to the new firm. Osiris specialized in high-quality pewter decorative arts, producing over 1,300 items under the Osiris trademark, including plates, candelabra, and decanters. The firm collaborated with prominent designers of the Jugendstil (German Art Nouveau) movement, such as Friedrich Adler and Peter Behrens.

Key Designers and Notable Works
Friedrich Adler (1878–1942) was a central figure in Osiris pewter design. His works, such as three-arm candelabra, exemplify flowing, organic lines inspired by nature, with sculptural, tree-like arms and harmonious symmetry. Adler’s designs bridged Art Nouveau and early Art Deco, reflecting both artistic innovation and functional craftsmanship.

Peter Behrens contributed designs like grotesque bird decanters, combining pewter and colored glass with intricate, imaginative forms. These pieces often bore the Osiris mark and the Nurnberger Handwerkskunst monogram, indicating approval by the Nuremberg applied arts museum.
