This striking life size panther has a commanding presence. Mouth slightly ajar in a scowl, exposed teeth, and piercing yellow glass eyes give life to this sculpture. It has the appearance of a panther on the prowl, with rippling muscles evident.
Sitting at the crossroads between Hollywood Regency, Safari and Mid-Century Modern, these animals scultures were pioneered by Dimitri Omersa in the 1950's. The exact age and origin of this item is unknown, but based on construction and the history of the trend, is assumed to be circa 1970's and from France or Italy. Weight matters in terms of construction quality, and this is heavy, indicating an actual internal metal skeleton instead of cheaper foam or fiberglass, though exact technique is unconfirmed. Sleek matte black leather wraps the exterior.
Most panther sculptures are in the 40" range. Please note that this is indeed, life size and measures almost a full six feet (70") long and 30" tall.
