This tapestry is inspired from a fine example of a classical Verdure Tapestry, woven in Aubusson in France the 17th Century. Many Verdure (or Greenery) Tapestries were woven throughout the 16th to 18th Centuries, with designs based on plant forms, reflecting the interest in botanical themes during this period. These tapestries featured country scenes, often with birds, rivers and castles. The ancient craft of tapestry-weaving has been established at Aubusson for at least five centuries. This little town, in La Marche area of France, became a natural centre for weaving, with a good supply of local wool, and the exceptional dyeing properties of the Creuse River which flows through the town. Many Verdures were woven in Aubusson, which became an important weaving centres patronised by the aristocracy. The weaving industry gradually prospered at Aubusson, as its reputation and clientele grew, and the town was granted the title of Royal Manufactory in 1665, in line with the Beauvais and Gobelins Workshops.
This beautiful tapestry is hand-woven by skilled artisans in pure New Zealand wool, keeping alive the centuries old traditional weaving methods from generation to generation. This tapestry is fully lined incorporating a sleeve along the top for hanging with a Hines hanging rod. Alternatively, this tapestry can be hung with a wooden batten which is a concealed method of hanging.
Composition: 100% Pure New Zealand Wool
