About the Artist
Pierre Dupuis was a prominent 17th-century French painter specializing in still lifes of fruits, flowers, and everyday objects. Born in Montfort-l’Amaury and based in Paris, he was successful in his lifetime: he served as Peintre Ordinaire des Ecuries du Roi (painter to the king’s stables) and was admitted to the Académie Royale de Peinture in 1664. His style shows strong influences from Northern European (especially Flemish and Dutch) still life traditions, with precise realism, attention to texture, light, and the sensual qualities of produce. He often painted plums, peaches, grapes, and other fruits arranged in baskets or on tables, sometimes with subtle vanitas undertones (themes of abundance and transience).
The Painting
The original Basket of Plums is an oil-on-canvas work painted before 1682. It resides in the Musée Jeanne d’Aboville in La Fère, France. It depicts a woven basket overflowing with ripe, plump plums (often with leaves and branches still attached), dramatically lit against a dark background on a draped surface.
