Late 19th-century Northwest Persian runner 6' 3"x 15' 2"
The carpet features a repeating "all-over" geometric design rather than a single central medallion. This is typical of Northwest Persian styles (such as those from the Karadja or Heriz regions), which often utilize stylized floral motifs, "harshang" (crab) designs, or palmettes rendered in a bold, angular fashion. It is framed by a multi-layered border system. The primary border likely features a classic "Samovar" or leaf-and-calyx pattern, providing a structured contrast to the busy activity of the inner field.
The intricate patterns are rendered in a variety of traditional vegetable-dyed hues, including deep indigo blues, ivory/cream for highlights, and touches of terracotta or gold. The age of the piece (over 130 years) likely gives these colors a soft, weathered patina known as "abrash" (natural variations in color tone).
Produced around 1890, this rug comes from the "Golden Age" of Persian weaving for the Western market. Northwest Persian rugs from this period are highly sought after by designers for their ability to bridge the gap between traditional antique decor and modern geometric aesthetics.
