Beautiful and rare Japanese collectible vase in handcrafted green Awaji-yaki ceramic with bamboo weaving, dating from the early 20th century, circa 1900-1930. Its elegant, elongated shape, flared at the top, is typical of Awaji pieces intended for decoration or ikebana (flower arranging). The clay is quite thin, with a glossy, deep green glaze displaying a subtle network of natural cracks. The signature on the base is to be identified; the inscription/kanji is difficult to read. This vase is quite rare, authentic, and representative of the workshops of Awaji Island during the early Shōwa period.
It measures 19 cm in height and 11 cm in maximum diameter. It is in very good overall condition for its age, showing some signs of age. The glaze is intact and glossy but exhibits a slight dust patina despite careful cleaning. The original weaving is complete, with one strand broken at the top (discreet and inconsequential), some minor wear to the rest of the weaving, and one strand loose at the bottom (also discreet and inconsequential). No cracks or chips. A lovely piece that will delight lovers of Japanese ceramics. Approximately 750-800g. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity
issues arising from misattribution
