The painting is a reworking of the model created by Michelangelo Merisi, known as Caravaggio, and housed in the Capitoline Museums. Saint John the Baptist was a very common subject in Michelangelo's paintings, who often depicted him as a child or young man, but also as an adult. In this case, John is still a boy, smiling serenely and amusedly, still unaware of his fate, while playing with the lamb, his iconographic symbol of sacrifice and martyrdom. On the back of the panel is a sealing wax stamp from an old collection. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity
