This is a Primitive Mail Sorting Desk Cabinet, used to organize mail into indidual cubbies. This one in particular has 32 individual cubbies, each measuing about 8 inches deep. In addition it has a large bottom shelf, and a very deep singular pull out drawer on the bottom of the desk. The Top half is removable from the base with some metal Brackets that look to be a later addition. as practical as this item is, it still comes furnished with detailed hand carved moldings along the top, and a ribbed desgin on the top and bottom of all 4 legs. The desktop is large and shows a very unique patina from years of service. Hard to find piece that can have many potential uses for display or organization!
