This tapestry is inspired from an original woven in the 15th Century on a high-warp (vertical) loom. At this time, tapestries were almost exclusively commissioned by the nobility, yet they often featured scenes from everyday life. This scene depicts the barrelling of wine on the left, with a castle and surrounding vineyards in the background; and on the right, the selling of the vintage to richly-dressed merchants, with a fortified town in the background. This tapestry is full of interesting historical details such as the wooden carts used for transporting the barrels. The style reflects a transitional period between the mille-Fleurs (thousand flowers) tapestries if the fifteenth century, (possibly inspired by the custom of strewing cut flowers on the ground on fte days) and the more pictorial scenes of a later period. The original tapestry may be seen at the Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris.
This beautiful tapestry is woven on a jacquard loom by skilled weavers, keeping alive the centuries old tradition of tapestry manufacturing from generation to generation. This tapestry is fully lined incorporating a sleeve along the top for hanging with a Hines hanging rod. Alternatively, this tapestry can be hung with a wooden batten which is a concealed method of hanging.
Composition: Loom Woven
Finish on reverse: This tapestry is fully backed with luxury cotton lining incorporating a sleeve along the top for hanging purposes.
