In the 1700s a new style of painting known as The English School evolved. Two of the greatest landscape painters to emerge at this time were John Constable and J.M.W. Turner. The Haywain is after John Constable (1776 1837), one of Britains finest landscape painters. Many of his paintings showed scenes of English country life in Suffolk and Hampshire. His style was to record real places under different lighting and weather conditions. The Haywain shows a wagon crossing the River Stour near Flatford Mill in Suffolk, England.
