This exotique tapestry was woven in the mid-eighteenth Century at Aubusson from a design attributed to Jean-Amedee Couderc, during the period when Orientalism was the trend. It was produced at the workshops of Charles-Jean Sallandrouse de la Mornaix between the years of 1840 and 1843. The original tapestry measures 568 x 700cm and is currently at Le Louvre in Paris. The ancient craft of tapestry-weaving has been established at Aubusson for at least five centuries. This little town in La Marche area of France became a natural centre for weaving, with a good supply of local wool, and the exceptional dyeing properties of the crystal water of the Creuse River which flows through the town. Production at Aubusson was carried out by small family workshops GROUPED in guild organisations. The skill of the weavers was thereby passed down in families from generation to generation. The weaving industry gradually prospered at Aubusson as its reputation and clientele grew, until the town was granted the title of Royal Manufactory in 1665, in line with the Beauvais and Gobelins Workshops.
This beautiful tapestry is woven on a jacquard loom by skilled weavers, keeping alive the centuries old tradition of tapestry manufacturing from generation to generation. This tapestry is fully lined incorporating a sleeve along the top for hanging with a Hines hanging rod. Alternatively, this tapestry can be hung with a wooden batten which is a concealed method of hanging.
Composition: 80% cotton, 16% viscose, 4% polyester
Finish on reverse: This tapestry is fully backed with luxury cotton lining incorporating a sleeve along the top for hanging purposes.
