A fine example of a classical Verdure Tapestry, woven in Lille in France the 17th Century. Many Verdure (or Greenery) Tapestries were woven throughout the 16th to 18th Centuries, with designs based on plant forms, reflecting the interest in botanical themes during this period. These tapestries featured country scenes, often with birds, rivers and castles. The town of Lille, together with Arras and Oudenarde, were important weaving centres patronised by the aristocracy. Production was often carried out by small family workshops GROUPED in guild organisations, creating mainly le rustique style tapestries.
This beautiful tapestry is woven on a jacquard loom by skilled weavers, keeping alive the centuries old tradition of tapestry manufacturing from generation to generation. This tapestry is fully lined incorporating a sleeve along the top for hanging with a Hines hanging rod. Alternatively, this tapestry can be hung with a wooden batten which is a concealed method of hanging.
Composition: 52% cotton, 48% wool
Finish on reverse: This tapestry is fully backed with luxury cotton lining incorporating a sleeve along the top for hanging purposes.
