This piece shows scenes from … Read more This is a very old historical embroidered tapestry likely dating from the late 16th century. This piece shows scenes from the life of Christ and possibly originated from Italy. The main scene depicts Christ being crowned with thorns with two figures. It was created using detailed embroidery with gold and silk threading. This piece is worked with colored thread, partly wound in silver, holding a foliate branch, flanked by two tormentors, displayed within a mandoria shaped reserve, the surround of brightly colored red silk, embroidered with flowering plants, all backed by a cloth of linen. This is presented in a lucite frame with a linen border. The backing is aged linen with threads criss crossing the piece. I temporarily removed this from the lucite for the purpose of this posting.
