Gregorio Sciltian (Nakhichevan-on-Don 1900 – Rome 1985) Gregorio Sciltian was a painter of Armenian origin who played a distinctive role in 20th-century Italian art, particularly within the context of figurative realism and the revival of classical technique. Born in Nakhichevan-on-Don (then part of the Russian Empire), Sciltian received his early artistic training in Russia before moving to Italy in the 1920s, where he settled permanently and developed his mature style. Deeply committed to the study of the Old Masters, Sciltian became known for his meticulous draftsmanship, refined use of light, and precise rendering of form. His work is characterized by a rigorous realism, often imbued with subtle irony or psychological tension, and frequently focused on still lifes, portraits, and carefully staged compositions. In the late 1930s, he was associated with the “Pittura Colta” movement, alongside artists such as Pietro Annigoni and Antonio Bueno, advocating a return to technical mastery and figurative tradition in opposition to both academic stagnation and avant-garde abstraction. Sciltian exhibited widely in Italy and abroad, participating in major exhibitions including the Venice Biennale and the Quadriennale di Roma. His work is held in public and private collections, and his influence is particularly noted for bridging classical painting techniques with a modern sensibility. Today, Sciltian is regarded as a key figure in the renewal of realist painting in Italy during the mid-20th century. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker.
