A pair of vases, each measuring 22 cm x 12 cm.
The vases are ivory-colored Satsuma ceramic with crackle details painted in matte black, as they were intended for export, and decorated with genre scenes in gold and relief.
The exports included variations on the traditional ivory and cream colors, to differentiate themselves and meet the demands of the international market.
The original ivory color and the associated crackle details can be seen inside the vases.
The mark refers to the ancient Shimazu samurai clan, rulers of Satsuma until the Meiji period.
The second part of the mark corresponds to "Grande Giappone" (Great Japan), thus placing the vases between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In the 1900s, it was replaced with "Made in Japan."
