The graduated proportions, the slender legs, and the calm surface effect of the recycled leather-covered tabletops create a formally cohesive and functionally ordered furniture set. Historical context: around 1900, nesting tables were a common type of furniture in the living rooms and parlors of the upper middle class. They allowed for flexible use as side tables, storage tables, or serving tables and could be nested together to save space when not in use. The use of leather overlays protected the tabletops and reflected the functional understanding of the time. Leather or leather-like overlays served to protect the tabletops and were functionally standard for nesting tables of this period.
