This vintage Replogle 12-inch Precision floor globe is made from a glass orb covered with paper map gores. The world globe illuminates with the pull of an old-fashioned light chain. Standing on a Duncan Phyffe style carved walnut wood base, the four fluted legs have decorative metal caps. The globe was designed and edited by cartographer Gustav Brueckmann.
The vintage world globe has a full metal meridian, a metal night & day time dial at the North Pole, and its original electrical wiring and plug.
This is a stately and classic vintage floor globe with a fine character of age. It would look amazing as an accent light in your den, study, or library. It's decorative, but it's also historic, showing the political boundaries of the world forever changed by World War II and in the throws of the emerging Cold War, as well as the last vestiges of European colonial expansionism.
The political boundaries on the globe date it to circa 1948 - 1949. Israel is present (1948), Jordan is labeled Transjordan (1946-1948), the formal division of Germany into East and West has not occurred (1949), Korea has not been divided into North and South (1948), Indo-China has not been separated into Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia, and Thailand is labeled Siam (1945-1949).
The vintage globe is in good condition for its age showing wear consistent with its age and use. The paper map gores are all intact but do show soiling and browning at the seams. There are some soil marks and a few stray pencil marks. There is a very small piece of paper missing in the middle of Saudi Arabia.
The metal meridian and time dial show their age. The walnut base has a few light scratches.
Should you intend illuminated the globe, it is recommended the electrical wiring be updated to current stands and that you use a low wattage, low heat producing light bulb.
