The plate originates from a late 18th-century english ichthyological publication and was engraved and published in london in may 1794 by f. P. Nodder, one of the most accomplished natural history engravers of his time. The fish is illustrated in a classic scientific manner, isolated against a plain background to allow close study of form, proportion, and surface detail. Characteristic features include the elongated, pointed snout, laterally compressed body, prominent dorsal fin spines, and finely articulated scales, all executed with dense, controlled line work. Subtle hand coloring highlights the eye and banding while maintaining the restrained, observational tone typical of late enlightenment natural history illustration. This species is commonly associated with what is now known as the long-nosed surgeonfish, a member of the surgeonfish family (acanthuridae), fishes widely distributed in tropical and subtropical seas. At the time of publication, classification systems were still developing, and such engravings played a key role in documenting and comparing newly described marine species brought to european attention through exploration and trade. Plates like this were produced for a learned audience of naturalists, collectors, and institutions, and were issued in relatively small numbers. Today, they are prized for their combination of scientific importance and visual elegance. The refined composition, neutral palette, and crisp engraving make this print particularly appealing to collectors of natural history, marine art, and 18th-century scientific illustration, as well as to interior designers seeking understated, intellectually grounded artwork. Condition report: fair to good condition. Original hand coloring. Noticeable age toning and patina throughout, with light browning and scattered surface marks consistent with age. Minor edge wear and small pin holes along the lower margin, as issued. No modern restoration observed. Framing tips this print lends itself well to a museum-style presentation. A warm off-white or soft ivory mat will complement the aged paper tone, paired with a natural walnut, light oak, or ebonized frame. Uv-protective glazing is recommended to preserve the original hand coloring and paper. Technique: hand-colored engraving maker: f. P.
