Historical Significance and Symbolism
The Dragon Ruyi is a profound cultural icon traditionally gifted to signify success, leadership, and the literal translation of as you wish. This specific sculpture captures the movement and fluid grace of the dragon, which has been a symbol of imperial power for millennia. By combining the dragon with the scepter of authority, the studio has created an object that serves as an auspicious talisman for the home or office. Originating from the sought after 2002 collection, this piece represents the height of the contemporary glass revival movement in Asia.
About the Artists: Loretta H. Yang AND Chang Yi
Often referred to as the Mother of Contemporary Chinese Glass Art, Loretta H. Yang founded Liuligongfang in 1987 alongside filmmaker Chang Yi. Their singular mission was to revive the lost art of Han Dynasty glass casting which had been absent from Chinese culture for centuries. Today, their work is held in the permanent collections of the world’s most prestigious institutions including the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, The Corning Museum of Glass in New York, and the Musee des Arts Decoratifs in Paris. Owning a Liuli piece is an investment in the revival of a 2,000 year old cultural identity.
The Pâte de Verre Process
Unlike traditional blown glass, the Pâte de Verre method involves a multi stage and week long firing process. Specialized glass meal is placed into a hand carved mold and fired at extreme temperatures using a lost wax casting technique. This allows for the intricate sculptural detail seen in the dragon scales and the ornate head of the scepter. The resulting frozen bubbles are the signature of this medium, often referred to as the breath of the glass, and signify the organic life within the crystal. This process ensures that no two pieces are exactly alike.

Designer Notes and Styling
From a design perspective, this sculpture functions as a definitive light catcher. Because of the varied density of the amber crystal, the piece transforms visually depending on its illumination. For the best effect, we recommend placing it on a lit bookshelf or a minimalist executive desk where it can catch natural afternoon light. It serves as a brilliant textural counterpoint to dark wood furniture like rosewood or mahogany and acts as a sophisticated focal point in a modern neutral toned Global Chic interior. This sculpture is an ideal power gift for a milestone promotion, a new business venture, or a high end housewarming.
More than a decorative accent, this Dragon Ruyi serves as a philosophical anchor for the modern home and a luminous reminder that power and grace can coexist. Whether it is guarding a private library or serving as a profound gift for a major milestone, this authenticated 2002 original offers a rare opportunity to own a piece of glass making history. Add this commanding work of contemporary Asian art to your collection today and let it become one of your own Cherished Memories.
