This tapestry depicts Prince Jean (1340- 1416), Duke of Berry, who was son of King John II of France. Well-known for his interests as a Collector, Prince Jean was a patron of the Arts, as well as playing a mediatory role between the Houses of Burgundy and Orleans.
Here the Duke is riding his horse accompanied by a richly-dressed lady, departing on a falconing expedition. Both are holding falcons on their wrists, while two attendants and their dog go on before them. Falconing was a popular pastime of the aristocracy in medieval times. Strips of leather called jesses were tied to the legs of the falcons. These jesses were about six inches long and always worn by trained birds to enable the falconer to hold the birds on the fist.
This tapestry reflects a transitional period between the Mille-Fleurs tapestries of the fifteenth century and the landscape scenes of a later period.
This beautiful tapestry is woven on a jacquard loom by skilled weavers, keeping alive the centuries old tradition of tapestry manufacturing from generation to generation. This tapestry is fully lined incorporating a sleeve along the top for hanging with a Hines hanging rod. Alternatively, this tapestry can be hung with a wooden batten which is a concealed method of hanging.
Composition: 77% wool, 20% cotton, 3% polyester
Finish on reverse: This tapestry is fully backed with luxury cotton lining incorporating a sleeve along the top for hanging purposes.
