This tapestry captures the spirit of the legend of King Arthur, thought to have lived in Britain in the 5th or 6th Century, although often associated with the Medieval Renaissance. Chivalry reached its peak in the 15th Century at the Royal Courts of England and France. Such Courts founded great Orders of Chivalry such as the Order of the Garter and the Order of the Golden Fleece, which were based solely on the Arthurian theme.
The tapestry shows King Arthur as he would possibly have been depicted had a late 15th century been commissioned by the Duke of Burgundy. On the right, Merlin leans through a doorway leading to the forest, and views a scene in a courtly garden where Arthur, watched by Guinevere, pulls the sword from the stone, thereby identifying himself as the rightful King.
King Arthur is then depicted as crowned and carrying the sword and entering the many towerd Camelot. He emerges with his knights, and will eventually meet Sir Mordred the Black Knight with whom he will engage in the Last Battle, following which the mortally wounded King will be carried by the Lady of the Lake to the Isle of Apples known as Avalon.
This beautiful tapestry is woven on a jacquard loom by skilled weavers, keeping alive the centuries old tradition of tapestry manufacturing from generation to generation. This tapestry is fully lined incorporating a sleeve along the top for hanging with a Hines hanging rod. Alternatively, this tapestry can be hung with a wooden batten which is a concealed method of hanging.
Composition: Loom Woven
Finish on reverse: This tapestry is fully backed with luxury cotton lining incorporating a sleeve along the top for hanging purposes.
