A distinctive vintage Moroccan Berber rug, handwoven in Morocco during the 1960s and distinguished by its warm saffron, faded coral-red, soft pink, aged ivory and black color palette. Measuring approximately 71 inches wide by 145 inches long, or 5 feet 11 inches by 12 feet 1 inch, this generously proportioned hand-knotted wool rug offers the length of a gallery carpet while remaining wide enough to anchor a living room, bedroom, library or dining area.
The composition centers on an elongated geometric medallion rendered in graduated coral and pink tones. Strong black-and-ivory diamond motifs punctuate the design, creating graphic contrast against the warmer saffron-colored field. Smaller abstract symbols and irregular geometric accents are distributed throughout the rug, giving the surface rhythm, movement and the unmistakable individuality of a textile woven by hand. A series of patterned borders frames the central composition, while the naturally irregular outline and fringed ends preserve its authentic artisanal character.
Handwoven by Berber artisans using traditional Moroccan weaving techniques, the rug is constructed from wool with a relatively low, tactile pile. The wool retains a soft, organic texture while remaining practical for use beneath furniture. Its time-softened colors and subtle variations are especially attractive in interiors where an overly bright or newly manufactured carpet would feel intrusive. The faded saffron and coral palette brings warmth without overwhelming a room, while the black geometric details provide enough definition to complement both antique and contemporary furnishings.
The design is associated with the visual language of Middle Atlas and Beni M’Guild weaving traditions, although a specific tribal provenance has not been independently documented. Its asymmetrical details, free interpretation of repeated motifs and natural color variations reflect the creative independence traditionally found in vintage Moroccan tribal rugs. Rather than following a rigid commercial pattern, the weaver created a one-of-a-kind composition with changes in scale, spacing and ornamentation that reveal the handmade process.
This authentic vintage Moroccan rug would work beautifully in a Spanish Colonial, Mediterranean, Moorish, Wabi-Sabi, organic modern, bohemian or Mid-Century Modern interior. It could be placed in front of a long sofa, beneath a dining table, alongside a large bed or in an expansive hallway or gallery. The warm colors also pair especially well with walnut, oak, travertine, plaster walls, aged leather, linen upholstery and other natural materials.
The rug dates to approximately 1960 and remains in good vintage condition. Gentle fading, tonal variation and wear consistent with age and use are present and contribute to its relaxed, collected appearance. These characteristics should be considered part of the rug’s history rather than manufacturing imperfections. Please examine all photographs closely for the most complete understanding of its color, texture and condition.
This one-of-a-kind Moroccan Berber carpet offers an appealing combination of substantial size, authentic hand-woven construction, softened vintage color and expressive Folk Art design. It is an excellent choice for a collector or designer seeking an original North African textile with decorative presence, warmth and genuine character.
