"A magnificent Early 20th Century Chinese Coromandel lacquer folding screen, exquisitely gilt hand-painted and Duiqi colored pigments across six panels, depicting, intricate ancient "Dizhu" wealthy social class of landowners with servants daily life scenes. The garden scene is decorated with plants, trees, bridges and archaic stone sculptures. Made of solid wood and each panel is supported by straight legs. The reverse side of each panel has a gilt decoration of bamboo stalks.
Each panel is framed in a narrow border at top and bottom with vignettes of still-life while the corners picture vases with peonies floral arrangements, which are emblematic of the refined wealthy culture. The panels joinery hardware is brass.
This screen dates to the early 20th century and was produced for the export market, combining decorative appeal with traditional Chinese iconography. This beautiful screen functions as a decorative wall mount, a headboard backdrop, or functional room divider.
