Bring home a true piece of desert-born artistry with this original Cosanti ceramic windbell. Showcasing a bold Brutalist aesthetic, this particularly large example features a beautifully weathered patina in rich shades of rust and green, full of depth, texture, and character.
Paolo Soleri (1919-2013) was a visionary architect, founder of the Cosanti Foundation and the experimental community of Arcosanti, developed on the basis of his concept of "arcology," a synthesis of architecture and ecology.
These ceramic bells are more uncommon even than their bronze brothers, as they are more labor intensive in their making. Each is formed from a uniquely carved mold, freed from the mold once dried, then adorned with organic and geometric shapes artfully incised and pigmented by hand prior to firing. Occasionally also incised with the artists signature (as is this example). The clapper is of fired clay, as well, while the fin (or sail) is copper with natural verdigris patina.
No two Soleri bells are alike, and therefore each has its own unique sound.
This bell produces a deeply resonant soothing chime. A sturdy triple-link chain at the top makes it easy to hang, while the original copper fin remains intact.
Meant to be enjoyed outdoors, these Soleri bells are weather resistant... but they weather and gather patina which adds to their charm. This example is in excellent vintage condition, with no chips. It is ready to be hung and enjoyed, adding sculptural beauty and effortless music to your porch or garden.
Detailed dimensions, approximate:
Bell itself: 8" x 8" x 10" tall; bell with fin is 18" tall; including chain, 28" tall.
