Remarkably elegant, this large low profile Wakasa coffee table is a geometric beauty. It is an authentic late 1920's-early 1930's lacquerware piece. It's beautiful rectangular form and jet black high gloss lacquer are adorned with scattered hand painted and inlaid foliage motifs. Some of leafs within the sprawling foliage are mother of pearl, some have a glittering sheen made with gold dust to create maki-e affect, and others are solid in coloration. It sits atop four squared, low profile legs to provide a supremely stable foundation. A true piece of artwork, it was a commissioned custom piece made in Japan and signed by the artist. It was owned by a very wealthy Japanese family that had an immaculate estate in Pasadena, CA and collected high end vintage and Vintage Japanese artwork, artifacts, and decor. It comes with it's original crystal clear glass top to protect the lacquer from daily use.
History:
Wakasa lacquerware which originated in the early Edo period (1603-1868) is produced in the area around the city of Obama. It is known for it's stunning patterns, often created with eggshells, seashells, and other natural elements. It is also known for the use of the togidashi maki-e, a technique which is elevation of the pattern through applying multiple layers of lacquer. These features give this craft a unique and composed appearance. It is also prized artistically, unlike various other types of lacquerware that are more appreciated for functionality only. These pieces are highly collectible because the entire production process is completed by a single craftsman, giving individuality for each piece.
