Offered for sale is a watercolor gouache painting of a portrait of a young woman with large gold hoop earrings by artist Leopoldo Romanach (1862-1951). The painting is signed in the lower right and presented in a gilt-wood frame under glass. Leopoldo Romañach y Guillen was a Cuban painter and educator. He was born in Sierra Morena, Corralillo, in the province of Las Villas, Captaincy General of Cuba, Spanish Empire. Romañach was a professor of color theory at Academia Nacional de Bellas Artes San Alejandro, and won a number of awards.

Born in Cuba, Romanach moved to Spain at a young age and was schooled there most of his youth. At the age of fifteen, he moved back to Cuba and later on enrolled at the San Alejandro Academy. He also received training in Italy on grants and afterward lived in New York City for many years.
