It was recently purchased from a … Read more This massive and extremely handsome hippo is carved from one large piece of wood. It was recently purchased from a local auction related to an estate of a world traveler. Aside from the basic auction information, little is known about the origin or age of this piece. At the time of purchase, the hippopotamus was listed as ‘solid rosewood’ but we cannot verify the species of wood. The hippo is in very good vintage condition. There are signs of natural cracks or splits in the wood, likely from drying out over time; see photographs. This piece is solid, heavy, and structurally sound.
