Title: Black Shard Vessel.
Artist: William Morris (American, born 1957).
Date: 1980.
Material: Blown glass.
This striking art glass vessel is the work of American glass artist William Morris. This piece of studio glass represents his early work he was producing at Pilchuck while gaffing for Dale Chihuly in the early 1980s. It is one of his shard series pillow vases and is dated 1980. There are several of these early vases currently on display at the Museum of Northwest Art in their, "Pilchuck Ideas" exhibition.
Emblazoned with abstract shards, the multi-color vessel is layered with rich colors, features iridescent blue-green and violet, set atop burgundy and sand-chestnut brown, accented by staple patterning and very thin strings of blue iridescent glass that appear to float over the body and further enhance the rim, over a black ground contrasted by an orange interior lining. Very skillfully executed for the young and upcoming glass artist, now considered one of the master's of glass blowing. The artist's signature is etched in script and dated 1980, see the lower-side edge.
William Morris is a world class glass artist. He was born in Carmel California and now resides in Seattle Washington, where he worked as Dale Chihuly’s master glassblower in the early 1980′s. His work can be found in permanent collection and museums around the world, including Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Louvre. William Morris later became famous for his petroglyph, stonehenge, and then glass artifacts. This stylized piece with its dramatic contrast, would make a statement in any room. A collection of the finest art glass, would not be complete without a piece by this artist. Opportunities to acquire a good example of William Morris' early work are rare, here is your chance to own one.
The vessel measures: 7.25 (6 neck, 2.75 base) W x 3 D x 11.25 H inches.
Provenance: N. California estate, available upon request.
Also included is a book about the artist and his work.
