David Roberts (1796–1864)
Bazaar of the Coppersmiths, Cairo
London: F.G. Moon, published December 1, 1848
Original 19th-century Standard Edition lithograph from David Roberts’ celebrated Egypt and Nubia series, printed and published in London by F.G. Moon and lithographed by Louis Haghe.
This example is printed on the heavier matte paper associated with the Standard Edition impressions. As issued, these lithographs were not trimmed to the image and include a small publisher’s imprint printed just below the center of the image, with the title set beneath in block lettering. An example of the publisher’s mark from a closely comparable Standard Edition impression is shown for reference.
The composition depicts the historic bazaar district near the complex of Sultan al-Salih Najm al-Din Ayyub in Cairo, capturing the architectural rhythm and daily life of the coppersmiths’ quarter. Color is restrained and well integrated, with subtle sky tonality and carefully balanced figure accents that support the underlying lithographic structure.
This work remains framed and has not yet been removed from its mount; the visible image opening measures approximately 13.25" x 20". The lithograph appears to retain full margins beneath the mat.
The lithograph is in near-pristine condition, with no visible foxing, staining, or surface disturbance.
