This tapestry, also known as The Tree of Life, originates from an embroidered wool portière designed by John Henry Dearle (1860–1932), a longtime collaborator of William Morris.
Produced around 1910 by Morris & Co., the firm founded by Morris at Merton Abbey, Surrey, this piece exemplifies the revival of tapestry weaving in England—a craft that had nearly vanished until Morris championed it.
Inspired by an eighteenth-century French manual on Arts & Crafts techniques, Morris wove his first experimental piece at Kelmscott Manor in 1879. He then trained his workmen in these methods, eventually moving production to Merton Abbey, where Morris & Co. created exquisitely designed curtains, rugs, wallpapers, and tapestries that remain celebrated today.
This beautiful tapestry is woven on a jacquard loom by skilled weavers, keeping alive the centuries old tradition of tapestry manufacturing from generation to generation. This tapestry is fully lined incorporating a sleeve along the top for hanging with a Hines hanging rod. Alternatively, this tapestry can be hung with a wooden batten which is a concealed method of hanging.
Composition: 70% cotton, 20% viscose, 10% polyester
Finish on reverse: This tapestry is fully backed with luxury cotton lining incorporating a sleeve along the top for hanging purposes.
