William Morris (1834-1896) became well-known for his designs in the decorative arts and the development of various crafts, including tapestry-weaving. Favouring Medievalism and using the painstaking methods of the craftsman, he adapted the arts of the Middle Ages for the modern world. Morris re-introduced quality and style in the decorative arts, and experimented with vegetable dyes, developing a unique palette, and became attributed with reviving the craft of tapestry-weaving in England during the last quarter of the 19th century. The decorating firm of Morris, Marshall, Faulk & Co was established in 1861 and later became Morris & Company after 1874.
This beautiful tapestry is woven on a jacquard loom by skilled weavers, keeping alive the centuries old tradition of tapestry manufacturing from generation to generation. This tapestry is fully lined incorporating a sleeve along the top for hanging with a Hines hanging rod. Alternatively, this tapestry can be hung with a wooden batten which is a concealed method of hanging.
