Sgraffito is an artistic or decorative technique of applying two successive layers of contrasting slip or glaze to an unfired ceramic body then scratching through the first glaze to reveal a design of contrasting color. The pieces showcase a distinctive Modernist aesthetic typical of mid-century handmade stoneware. The design features a multi-petal stylized geometric rosette at the center of the chop/display plate, echoed by concentric bands of detailed arc and diamond-latticework on the band. The matching handled carafe/decanter echos the same design. This hand-made set is such a cool, Modernist form that looks oh so good on display.
