Known as "Maître d'Hôtel" (or butler), the colorful ceramic pitcher depicts an anthropomorphic pig dressed as a waiter, seated on a yellow chair with an elegantly curved handle forming the back. The amusing figure wears a pale green tricorn hat with red trim, a lavender jacket, a white apron, and a necktie, creating a charming example of French humorous pottery.

The pig's elongated snout forms the pouring spout, while its expressive face, oversized ears, and carefully modeled clothing bring delightful personality to the composition. The pitcher is finished in richly glazed shades of mustard yellow, pale green, lavender, and soft pink, characteristic of Onnaing's distinctive barbotine production.

The underside bears the impressed model number 737. This particular model is documented in Maryse Bottero's reference book Pichets en Barbotine, page 83, adding historical interest and collectibility.

Founded in Northern France, the Faïencerie d'Onnaing became particularly celebrated during the late 19th century for its imaginative majolica pitchers depicting animals, humorous characters, and everyday occupations. Its figural pig and rooster pitchers remain among the factory's most recognizable creations.

The antique pitcher is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, retaining its vibrant original glazes. A wonderful addition to a French majolica collection or decorative kitchen display.
