Exquisite Vintage 1950s Framed Thai "Nang Yai" Shadow Puppet – Depicting Phra Ram (Rama)
Elevate your collection with this museum-quality work of Southeast Asian heritage. This authentic Vintage Thai Shadow Puppet is a premier example of the ancient Nang Yai (meaning "large hide") tradition. Unlike smaller puppets with movable limbs, the Nang Yai is a singular, masterfully carved silhouette designed to be held by dancers in the Royal Court theaters of Thailand.
Hand-carved from perforated buffalo hide, this piece depicts Phra Ram (Rama), the divine hero and protagonist of the Ramakien epic (Thailand’s national epic). The figure is captured in a classical Khon (Royal Masked Dance) posture, identifiable by the tall, multi-tiered Chada crown and the intricate Thepanom style gestures.
The deep black pigment and thousands of delicate incisions create a mesmerizing Siam silhouette, making it a perfect example of Ethno-Graphic art. This framed textile bridges the gap between Dark Academia and Global Eclectic design, offering a sophisticated, high-contrast focal point for a library, gallery wall, or curated modern interior.
Dimensions:
13”W x 1”D x 17”H
Condition:
Excellent Vintage Condition – The buffalo hide remains supple and expertly preserved with no signs of brittleness or cracking. The intricate lattice-work and perforations are crisp. It is housed in a contemporary black gallery frame with a white mounting that provides a clean, museum-style backdrop. The piece is professionally sealed and wired for immediate hanging.
A rare and storied find, this Phra Ram shadow puppet is a preserved fragment of UNESCO-recognized performing arts. It represents a sophisticated "Court Theatre" tradition and is a must-have for serious collectors of Asian antiquities and fine Artisan Studio history.
