John Kelly was born in Scotland in 1939 into a family with deep maritime roots and moved to Canada as a child. His years at sea as a Merchant Marine along the coasts of Canada and Alaska profoundly shaped his artistic vision, informing much of his later work. Recognized early for his remarkable talent, Kelly pursued formal training at the Art Center College of Design near Los Angeles, where he honed his distinctive, narrative-rich style.
