Mark Catesby (British, 1683-1749) Engraving of "The Lane-Snapper and The Tobaccopipe Fish ", unframed. Catesby was a highly celebrated naturalist and artist of the period. His hand-colored engravings are admired for their rich colors, and combination of scientific accuracy with artistic charm. This engraving originates from Catesby's publication, 'The Natural History of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands'. This engraving on paper depicts two fish from the coastal waters of the American colonies. The Lane-Snapper (Lutjanus synagris) is shown in profile and dominates the composition. The snapper's most arresting feature is its lavender upper body, intricately patterned with irregular, undulating cream-colored stripes that run horizontally from gill to tail. The dorsal fin rises sharply along the spine, colored in a golden ochre wash, each spine individually articulated. The pectoral and pelvic fins echo this warm yellow tone. Below, stretching horizontally like a living line, is the Tobaccopipe Fish (Petimbuabo brasil), a long, narrow form. Its body resembles a reed or wand, rendered in subtle earthy browns, punctuated by small, evenly spaced fins. The tubular snout extends forward with precision, emphasizing the species' specialized feeding adaptation.
This is a versatile statement piece for modern interiors. It is perfect for coastal or nautical-inspired spaces, and works beautifully as standalone artwork or on a gallery wall. This striking fish engraving complements contemporary, traditional, transitional, or modern eclectic decor, bringing both scholarly heritage and visual drama to any interior.
