This fabulous pair of 1970s Norwegian modern lounge chairs, attributed to Jon Hjortdal and produced by Velledalen, represents an example of Scandinavian craftsmanship and organic modern design. Sculptural, refined, and beautifully proportioned, these chairs embody the timeless elegance of Nordic furniture-making.
The deep, button-tufted leather upholstery adds warmth and texture, perfectly complementing the rich, dark stained bentwood frames. Their architectural yet fluid shape remind us of its Modernist and functional design, achieving a balance that feels natural, contemporary, and enduring. Together, they radiate the quiet comfort and understated sophistication characteristic of Norwegian and Danish mid-century interiors, capturing the cozy spirit of Nordic winters and the purity of handcrafted design.
Constructed from solid beech bentwood and upholstered in beautifully patinated brown leather, the chairs offer a remarkable blend of durability and comfort. The bentwood structures provide a slight, responsive flexibility when seated, offering gentle support while maintaining firm stability. Generous cushioning and padded armrests enhance their ergonomic appeal, making them as pleasant to use as they are to behold.
The wood grain, with its deep tonal variations, underscores the organic and timeless aesthetic of the pair.
Recently cleaned, lightly restored, and nourished with leather grease, these pieces have been preserved in excellent vintage condition. The wooden frames have been oiled to restore their natural luster, emphasizing the craftsmanship and attention to detail present throughout. One of the chairs armrests shows slightly more visible signs of wear — as seen in the photos — but there are no holes or deep cracks, only a beautiful patina consistent with age and use.
Compact yet visually substantial, the chairs’ low profiles and open, geometric forms allow them to integrate seamlessly into modern, minimalist, or vintage-inspired interiors. This piece has an attribution mark,
