This have been done for centuries (as long as tapestries have been woven). Artist who are famous now, would do this to buy supplies, pay rent, wine/food. These pieces are hand painted and this one is 19th century. The cartoons after use would just be rolled up or discarded. A cartoon in a "sense" is like owning the original tapestry. This cartoon was originally rolled up and to be able to show it, it had to be put on a frame or a rigid back. Many were cut up and framed as decorative art. LOOK AT THE IMAGES.
