This refined pair of Japanese Kutani porcelain vases dates from the late Meiji period and was produced for the Western export market.
Each vase is richly decorated with polychrome enamels on a deep coral-red ground, a hallmark of Kutani aka-ji ware. The scenes depict elegant court figures surrounded by peonies, blossoming branches, bamboo and stylized foliage, all painted with great attention to detail and balance.

The vases rest on a beautifully decorated base with a vertical leaf motif and feature a flared neck with floral decoration on a black ground, characteristic of Kutani craftsmanship.


The base bears a red painted mark “Dai Nippon Sei” (Made in Great Japan), an export mark used between 1891 and 1921, allowing for a confident dating around 1900–1915.
