Quintessential folk art in warm red, this hand- crafted hinged box is made in the southern part of Mexico in the state of Guererro,the town of Olinala; decorated with fish, rabbbits, birds, butterflies, the cunning piece is a welcome reminder of non-humans. Those appearing here, especialy the rabbit, are very old symbols of the workings of Earth.
The wood is covered with mixtures of ground earth, plants, herbs and let dry, once for the carving, and the process repeated for the coloring. Then the lacquer, concocted from another local plant.
The aura of this box is one of comfort: no harsh contrasting colors, just the soft red, with animals and floral motifs in gold; patterns of dots in, turquoise blue, and avocado provide contrast to the figures and color. The black trim top and bottom sets the design off perfectly.
5 1/4" x 4 1/4" x 3", perfect condition.
