This exquisite 1922 etching captures the ethereal elegance of the Roaring Twenties, depicting a reclining female figure in a dreamlike setting. Rendered with the fluid lines and soft Cubist influence that defined the artist's best work, the composition features a mermaid in quiet intimacy. The delicate line work creates a velvety texture and soft atmosphere, drawing the viewer into a private, reflective moment that feels both modern and timeless.
Marie Laurencin (1883–1956) was a central figure of the Parisian avant-garde and one of the few female artists to define the School of Paris. As the muse of poet Guillaume Apollinaire and a close contemporary of Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, she carved out a unique space in modernism with her distinctively feminine, curvilinear aesthetic. Her work is held in major institutions worldwide, including the MoMA, the Tate, and the Musée de l'Orangerie in Paris, cementing her legacy as an icon of 20th-century art.
Unlike her widely available lithographs from the 1940s and 50s, this piece is a rare original etching from 1922—the absolute height of her career. Printed on desirable, high-quality Arches wove paper (visible under the edition numbering), it is strictly limited to an edition of just 50 copies, numbered 13/50 and hand-signed in pencil by the artist, making it an exceptionally scarce find compared to larger commercial runs. This is an opportunity to own an authentic, early piece of history from the celebrated "Femme Peintre" of the Jazz Age.

The etching itself boasts a strong, crisp impression with distinct ink levels and clear plate lines. The piece is presented in a vintage silver-tone frame that exhibits chipping and signs of wear. The glass is clear with no cracks. Please note: The artwork has not been examined out of the frame, and the mounting method is unknown. less
