Artist Biography
Mario Carl-Rosa, artist name of Raoul Marie Léon Cornilleau, born in Loudun on October 29, 1853 and died in July 1913, is a landscape painter, writer and French journalist.Son of Léon-Joseph Cornilleau and Anne Alida Besnard, in 1885, he is known for the lights of his Autumn landscapes. he became a member of the Society of French Artists.
He marries his pupil Marguerite. Writer and journalist, he publishes brochures on art.In 1889, the Emperor of Russia bought him a painting. The Regent of Tunis placed an order for him in 1892. In 1895, he obtained a 2nd class medal at the Salon of French artists and was knighted in the Legion of Honor in 18991.
Marius Toudoire, the architect of the Gare de Lyon, commissioned him in 1900, like many painters, for a canvas to adorn the Great Hall of the restaurant of this place, called Le Train bleu, at the request of the owner of Paris-Lyon- Mediterranean (PLM), Mr. Dervillé. That same year he was asked for a wall decoration at the Universal Exhibition in Paris and received this year and the following medals and prizes for his works.Creator of the first Loudun Museum (Charbonneau-Lassay), or today, an entire room is dedicated to him and his students. He was the Director, founder of the Academy of Fine Arts on the Champs-Élysées. He is a representative of the Barbizon school
