An antique kbarrister bookcase from the Arts & Crafts era c1920 by Globe Wernicke of the Mission line features oak construction with three stacks having pull-out leaded glass doors and raised on a base with a single long drawer. The set has original labels as photographed. Barrister bookcases originated in 17th-18th century England for lawyers (barristers) needing to transport law books; their modular, stackable design with protective glass doors allowed for easy disassembly, transport, and reassembly, a necessity as lawyers followed judges on circuit. Popularized in the U.S. by companies like Globe-Wernicke and Hale Mfg. Co. in the late 19th/early 20th centuries, these sturdy, elegant cabinets became popular beyond law offices for home and library use, evolving from functional necessity to collectible furniture.
